I am off work this week with T.M.J (Temporomandibular joint disorder), Has any one had this? any idea when i will feel better, i have such jaw/ear pain.

i am due to see maxillofacial consultant again but not until May the 19th.

I am taking ibuprofen and amitriptyline they are helping. eating is still a problem, jaw clicking so painful, i have not been to G.P as i dont think he can do any more,i have tried to get an earlier appointment at hosp, but nothings available.


Just thought i would ask, this is the worst its been for me.

hi

i also have problems with the TMJ- it is the crappy RA with me Im afraid.

I have found the phorpain gel, rubbing in on the cheek/ near ear every now and again does help.
I have been offered a steroid injection in there before... declined it tho- decided it could be very painful.

i have known RAers have their TMJ removed and know a lady with crohns with a jaw replacement.

it can be done.

much love- its miserable (Is it both sides at the moment)

Oh you poor thing Jenni, not keen on the steroid thing myself.

I have not tried the gel, only ice and heat i think last appointment i had they said something about gum shields i may have to try this although i am not aware of any tooth grinding at night.

Its so hard i keep forgetting and chew on the wrong side, its always on the right side, i suffer neck/shoulder pain also on the same side dizzy spells this may be my ear?

I find it so difficult when off work when i return they always ask if its R.A related, i cant even pronounce it lol i will have to write it down.

I have not been on for a while, hubby is in the middle of fitting a new kitchen and i may not bet doing the manual stuff, but i have all the cleaning etc he has put new lights up and will now be putting a new bamboo floor down, maybe i am doing to much, but you cant just sit there i do try!lol (have to go to another part of the hse)
How long have you been suffering?
Will need ankle replacement in time, dont want any more.

Hi Anne-Marie

I too have problems with TMJ, more usually when the RA isn't fully controlled. Like you plenty of clicking and pain at times, and mainly the right side.

I was offered steroid injection but, like Jenni, turned it down. With me injections work but don't seem to last long! As soon as I get discomfort I lay off the 'chewable' stuff and stick with soups, rice pudding and fruit smoothies. It generally settles down with adequate pain relief fairly quickly, well ... until next time. The phorpain gel sounds good though and anything is worth a try.

Jaw replacement sounds a bit 'freakish' (but necessary sometimes); not sure I'd fancy travelling that path!

I was really bad last week when I had a very long root canal treatment. Even my eye socket hurt with keeping my mouth so wide open for 25 mins. I was so close to just getting off that chair and walksing out! Mine took a few days to settle after that. It actually felt like it was shifting sideways when I closed it.

It has really bothered me as I have another tooth to do later this month but the jaw bit is really bothering me. I might have to ask for a break in the middle!

I too suffer from jaw pain. I get it in both sides and it has left the right side of my face very slightly swollen. I go on a diet of soup and yoghurt for about 3 days. I cannot bite anything when its bad so I dont even try to. I think if you try and rest it as much as possible and take strong pain killers, mine usually turns a corner in about 3 days. Hope this helps, the jaw pain is the worst RA pain (in my opinion)

I have just had the next lot of abatacept so am a bit on the spaced out side!

I have had RA for about 14 yrs now. I am 35. its a long old time! the TMJ comes and then goes with me. I first got it about 7 yrs ago and it comes on may be 2-3 times a year.

I end up speaking out of one side of my mouth and my family chuckle at the aardvark jokes....(like the disney aardvark who speaks lop sidedly apparently- you love the family sense of humour, dont you?!RollEyes )

rest and phorpain gel is about it for me- or an over all stab of depomedrome in your bottom....

ThumpUp Well, gosh thanks, I am going back to work tommorrow, spoke with my boss told her how hard it was even to talk to her on the phone,with tha Jenni(aardvark voice)lol, She said if it happens again i can send an e-mail, seems strange to e-mail in sick lol.


I have been a little out of it myself, think i overdosed on amitriptyline.

So 4 days later i return to work, about right Val

Alisa hope you get on ok at the dentist, I thought i had a wisdom tooth coming at the beginning it was all the gum pain!
